LLU Deadlines for Proposal Submissions
NOW or at least 3 months* before sponsor deadline
Start work on the proposal package
- Obtain funding announcement and application packet
- Confirm that the PI is eligible for the award
- Confirm that the project is feasible
- Plan the proposal, including:
- Notifying the proper people
- Determining the Submission Process
- Considering key budget issues
Write the Research Plan
- Start writing the research plan with the sponsor's review criteria in mind
*For major proposals (e.g. NIH R01s), PIs are urged to collect preliminary data and start developing the research plan at least 6-12 months before the sponsor deadline.
LLU Deadlines for Proposal Submissions
Regardless of proposal type or submission type, the PI must submit the completed application package to Research Administration for final review and approval at least 5 business days before the sponsor's application deadline.
The following RECOMMENDED TIME LINE is designed to meet this goal and guides investigators from proposal conception to submission.
AT LEAST 2 months before sponsor deadline
Continue work on the proposal package
- Request CVs or biosketches from senior key personnel
- Request letters of support
- Submit a preliminary budget to your assigned Financial Analyst
- Request a Subrecipient Commitment Form and budget from external collaborator/s (see award process when LLU is the grantor of a sub-award)
- If you are a co-investigator on an application submitted by another institution, see award process when LLU is the recipient of a sub-award
- Start work on applicable issues for the Responsible Conduct of Research.
Note: If the sponsor uses a "Just-in-Time" submission process, some issues may be take care of after submission. But this does not apply to all regulatory issues, nor to all sponsors. Check the sponsor's terms and conditions, then contact Research Administration for more information.
Evaluate the Research Plan
- Get constructive criticism from funded colleagues to improve the research plan
AT LEAST 1 month before sponsor deadline
Continue work on the proposal package
- Continue work on applicable issues related to the Responsible Conduct of Research
- Start assembling the components of the proposal package (paper forms or electronic uploads, as required by the sponsor)
Revise the Research Plan
- Revise the research plan based on constructive criticism from funded colleagues
AT LEAST 2 weeks (10 business days) before sponsor deadline
Continue work on the proposal package
- Complete Sections I and II of the LLU Transmittal and submit this to Research Administration either by hard copy, fax, or by clicking on the "Submit by Email" button to email the form as an attachment (option available for those who have Adobe Professional installed on the computer).
- Complete Section III of the LLU Transmittal regarding final budget information and submit to your assigned Financial Analyst
- Complete Section IV of the LLU Transmittal regarding Research Conflict of Interest
- Resolve any remaining issues related to the Responsible Conduct of Research that are required to complete the application package
Finalize the Research Plan
- Write the cover letter and include information recommended by the sponsor
AT LEAST 1 week (5 business days) before sponsor deadline
- Assemble or upload electronically the complete application (Request electronic application support)
- Complete Section V of the LLU Transmittal, including:
- PI Approval and Assurance
- Getting required administrative approvals from your department/center and school
- Submit the FINAL proposal package to Research Administration for approval no later than 5 business days before the application deadline, including:
- the signed LLU Transmittal, and
- the complete, final application (either paper or electronic version, as required by the sponsor)
The appropriate LLU authorized official will review and approve the proposal.
